Maiti Nepal

Introduction

Maiti Nepal was born out of a crusade to protect Nepali girls and women from crimes like domestic violence, trafficking for flesh trade, child prostitution, child labor, and various forms of abuse, exploitation, and torture. In 1993, a group of socially committed professionals like teachers, journalists, and social workers together formed Maiti Nepal to fight against the social evils inflicted upon our female populace.

Its prominent focus has always been centered on preventing trafficking for forced prostitution, rescuing victims of the flesh trade, and rehabilitating them. This social organization also actively works to provide justice for the victimized girls and women through criminal investigation and waging legal battles against the criminals. Since its inception, it has drastically highlighted the trafficking issue with its strong advocacy from the local to national and international levels.

Birth of Maiti Nepal

Maiti denotes a girl’s real family, where she was born into. The word has a sentimental value, especially for a married Nepali woman. She then solely belongs to her husband and his family forever. However, Maiti Nepal is home to all women and girls regardless of being married or not. A safe haven for those, whose rights are exploited, violated, and neglected by society. It was a crusade to find such victims a home for their protection from social evils that gave birth to this organization in April 1993.

It was started by a handful of conscious professionals like teachers, journalists, and social workers committed to combating social crimes like domestic violence, girl trafficking, child prostitution, child labor, and various forms of female exploitation.

Vision:

A society free from sexual and other forms of exploitation against children and women.

Mission:

To prevent human trafficking by reaching out to the community, particularly children and women, by raising the awareness level of communities and extending life skills so that children and women are not trafficked into different forms of abuse including exploitation.

Guided by the aspirations of affected people, we pursue our mission by releasing children and women forced into sexual exploitation, extend support to survivors; protect vulnerable girls by empowering them through personal participation and expression and work with them to enhance livelihood skills.

Objectives:

  1. Advocate, conduct awareness campaigns, seek public support, and create social pressure against trafficking of children and women
  2. Provide counselling, support and life skills to children and women at risk of being trafficked.
  3. Rescue trafficked children and women from exploitative conditions abroad and repatriate them
  4. Provide legal services, health counselling, and assistance to destitute women, survivors of girl trafficking and victims of domestic violence.
  5. Rehabilitate survivors by providing them with education, counselling, and a safe home.
