Colombia removed as Copa America co-host
Colombia removed as Copa America co-host. The Copa America, which starts in June, will not be held in Colombia. Conmebol, the apex body of South American football, decided on Thursday to remove Colombia from the co-hosts. With less than a month to go before the start of the tournament, Colombia has been removed from the organizers after a street protest against Colombian President Ivan Duque.
The Copa America, the world’s oldest football tournament, was scheduled to be held in Argentina and Colombia from July 13 to July 10. And for the first time, the two countries would co-host the Copa. But now Colombia remains the organizer. Hours before the decision, Colombia urged Conmebol to move the tournament. The country’s sports minister, Ernesto Lucena, said reports that the tournament had to be moved to the end of the year due to the COVID-19 Pandemic.
In a statement, Conmebol said it was “impossible” to move the tournament to November. Adding that it would be known in a few days where the game was scheduled to take place in Colombia. On Tuesday, Argentine President Alberto Fernandez said he was ready to host the Copa America if Colombia did not co-organize.
Protests erupted in Colombia on April 28 after President Eva tried to raise taxes during the pandemic. This led to last year’s Copa Libertadores match between Colombia’s USA de Cassi and Brazil’s Atletico Mineiro.
Which country will participate in Copa America 2021?
This time the Copa America will be played by dividing the North and South regions into two groups. Group A includes Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Paraguay, and Uruguay, while Group B includes Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Venezuela. The top four teams from both groups will advance to the quarterfinals.
The 2022 World Cup hosts Qatar and Australia were scheduled to play in the Copa America. But due to the coronavirus pandemic, both withdrew in February. Even if Colombia is removed from the organizers, it is not easy for Copa America. In Argentina, the incidence of covid 19 infections has been increasing daily and the number of deaths has also increased. A total of 72,000 people have died in Argentina due to Covid 19. Due to the Corona epidemic, the 2020 Copa America was postponed a year later.
