Mr. Binod Shahi from Nepal wons ICIMOD Mountain Prize 2020
Inspiration: Binod Shahi has been declared as one of the winners of the ICIMOD Mountain Prize 2020. For his selfless work in improving mountain schools and opportunities for youth in the Dolpo region.
Binod Shahi is a very humble person. He leaves Kathmandu and goes to Dolpo to teach kids for over 10 years. It takes great courage and commitment. He did it every year from April to October.
In extreme cold, they come back to Kathmandu to collect educational materials to take to Dolpo for the kids. He was also nominated in TOP 50 of the Global Teacher prize 2018.
ICIMOD Mountain Prize 2020
Every year, the ICIMOD Mountain Prize is awarded to an individual, organization, or private sector entity based in the Hindu Kush Himalaya (HKH). Or beyond, for outstanding efforts in enabling sustainable and resilient mountain development in the HKH region to benefit the environment as well as communities—particularly the poor, the youth, and women.
The winners of the 2020 Mountain Prize were announced on 11 December in Kathmandu during the International Mountain Day celebrations. This year’s award was shared by two winners – the Jagrati Swayam Sahayta Group of Uttarakhand, India and Mr. Binod Shahi of Nepal.
This year also saw special honorable mention given to three organizations and three individuals working regionally, in Bangladesh, China, India, Myanmar, and Pakistan.
